Days at sea

 

We now have had 2 days at sea as we sail through the Java Sea between Borneo and Sumatra towards our next ports on the island of Java. It was nice to relax a bit, as we've been busy so far! So a nice mix of walks around the deck, swimming, listening to lectures about upcoming ports, as well as some of the musical entertainment. And of course meals!

Our cabin was a pleasant surprise. We opted for an obstructed view cabin as it had a great central location. It turns out that these partially obstructed cabins have floor to ceiling windows and are between 2 lifeboats. So you can see out a bit, and get lots of light.

We crossed the equator today, so there was a King Neptune Ceremony that was a lot of fun to watch. Crew members who were crossing for the first time had to kiss a fish, got covered in colored goop, then jumped in the pool.

This afternoon there was a Nutcracker Tea, I had a chance to catch up with a friend from the Travel Industry. Then we finished off the day with a wonderful dinner in Canaletto.

Singapore, first day.

  A looong flight to get here! Over 16 hours non-stop. We were in Premium Economy, so comfortable seats and good meals. I managed to get some sleep, it's a night flight all the way. On approach over the bay you can see the hundreds of freighters and other boats, quite a sight. We had a pre-booked transfer to the Fullerton hotel. It was a friendly and efficient service and then a warm welcome at the hotel. Though we arrived at 9am we were able to check in to our room. Karen and Aaron have been here in Singapore for a few days so they came by our room on their way back from breakfast. Ian didn't get much sleep on the plane so he went for a nap.  Karen, Aaron and I took a taxi over to Gardens by the Bay (about 15 minutes and a little over $10.00. This is one of Singapore's top tourist attractions. The outdoor gardens and exhibits are free. The Cloud Forest , Flower Dome and Super Tree observatory are extra. Westerdam

 A short post today, as it's a transition day. Another wonderful breakfast at the Fullerton, I had the Laksa again. Then Karen and I went for a short walk over to Raffles hotel (about 45 minutes roundtrip). A nice walk mainly through park. Then we packed up an organized ourselves to transition to the cruise. We booked a car to take us to the cruise terminal after checkout at noon. The ride only takes about 15 minutes. The cruise terminal was very busy, and it took about an hour to go through the various procedures and board the ship. We had a snack and a drink then went to unpack. About this time the skies opened, and the rain bucketed down. I didn't realize until I finished my unpacking and saw the pools of water everywhere!. Less than an hour later the rain was over, and it was fairly clear for sail away.  We're on early dining, and had a nice dinner featuring Singapore Chili Shrimp. Not hot at all, a lovely flavour. Fullerton Hotel Singapore

  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fullerton. It's one of the grand old hotels of Singapore, and the former post office. Great location, comfortable rooms, friendly service and delicious breakfasts. And they have the most incredible Christmas decorations, featuring teddy bears!
