Off to Asia!

 

I'm heading off again! This time I'm flying over to Singapore, and doing a cruise amongst the islands of Indonesia. I've always thought that a cruise would be a great way to see this area, if you look at the map you can see why! I haven't been to Asia in over 10 years, and I'm eager to return. 

It will be a bit of a shock to the system going from winter in Vancouver to the steamy tropics, and a very different Christmas and New Years....

    Hi Carla: What a wonderful idea! We love Singapore. Are you going by yourself? Make sure you try Hainanese chicken with rice, Roti Chanai, and Har Mee (Prawn noodle soup) at the local hawker centers. Cheers, Jessie and Dorian

Singapore, first day.

  A looong flight to get here! Over 16 hours non-stop. We were in Premium Economy, so comfortable seats and good meals. I managed to get some sleep, it's a night flight all the way. On approach over the bay you can see the hundreds of freighters and other boats, quite a sight. We had a pre-booked transfer to the Fullerton hotel. It was a friendly and efficient service and then a warm welcome at the hotel. Though we arrived at 9am we were able to check in to our room. Karen and Aaron have been here in Singapore for a few days so they came by our room on their way back from breakfast. Ian didn't get much sleep on the plane so he went for a nap.  Karen, Aaron and I took a taxi over to Gardens by the Bay (about 15 minutes and a little over $10.00. This is one of Singapore's top tourist attractions. The outdoor gardens and exhibits are free. The Cloud Forest , Flower Dome and Super Tree observatory are extra.  A short post today, as it's a transition day. Another wonderful breakfast at the Fullerton, I had the Laksa again. Then Karen and I went for a short walk over to Raffles hotel (about 45 minutes roundtrip). A nice walk mainly through park. Then we packed up an organized ourselves to transition to the cruise. We booked a car to take us to the cruise terminal after checkout at noon. The ride only takes about 15 minutes. The cruise terminal was very busy, and it took about an hour to go through the various procedures and board the ship. We had a snack and a drink then went to unpack. About this time the skies opened, and the rain bucketed down. I didn't realize until I finished my unpacking and saw the pools of water everywhere!. Less than an hour later the rain was over, and it was fairly clear for sail away.  We're on early dining, and had a nice dinner featuring Singapore Chili Shrimp. Not hot at all, a lovely flavour. Fullerton Hotel Singapore

  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fullerton. It's one of the grand old hotels of Singapore, and the former post office. Great location, comfortable rooms, friendly service and delicious breakfasts. And they have the most incredible Christmas decorations, featuring teddy bears!
