Port Klang, Malaysia
Our first port of call, and our only stop in Malaysia is Port Klang. The port itself is very industrial. Most of the shore excursions are to Kuala Lumper, but as I have been there twice I didn't care to go back. Also, it's a long way from the port, so makes a long day. There was a heavy rain fall first thing this morning, but luckily it had cleared up by the time the tours were leaving.
Ian and I signed up for a Holland America excursion to the city of Klang. Our first stop was to a traditional Chinese Malay house, now a tea house. They had a lovely garden with lots of local plants. We had some local coffee or Mulberry tea, and some local treats, like ear biscuits and rice flour balls in syrup. Across the street was a Chinese temple that had just celebrated a holiday on the solstice. There were still huge joss sticks burning, and lots of candles, flowers and incense.
We then drove in to Klang, to the main shopping street with mainly Indian stores selling saris and gold. There was an interesting mix of buildings, Mosque, Hindu temple and stores from the British era We had free time here, but as we weren't interested in shopping and it was very humid, we could have done with less time. Then to a museum, mostly about the sultans of Malaysia. The historical displays were interesting and there were some beautiful artifacts, but again I could have done with less time.
We got back to the ship about 2pm, and had a very welcome light lunch and even more welcome beer!
Karen and Aaron were on a longer shore excursion to Kuala Lumpur, and didn't get back until 5pm. They decided to skip the dinning room dinner. Ian and I had a nice lighter meal as we were going to the Mariner reception by the pool after 6pm. I had sea bass with Malaysian spices, and Ian had laksa. They seem to have quite a few local choices. Later I walked the decks, enjoying the beautiful evening before listening to a set at the piano bar.
